“You have to be people friendly, have high morals and be motivated by earning money.”

“At the gym and reading history books. I also like to garden.”

Why did you decide to join Clean Harbors?
“It was a new experience for me in the hazmat field.”

What does a typical day look like for you?
“I get up early and do all inspections for my truck, then tag and load it. Then I plan my trip to the Clean Harbors plant that I'm going to.”

What do you like about your work?
“Every load has its own challenges and every day is different. That's what I like.”

“Knowledge, safety, training, and respect for others.”

“When I started in 2009, getting my commercial driver's license was the last thing I thought I would ever do. I remember saying, ‘I'll never get my Class 1', especially coming from a small city in Manitoba and driving in and around a huge city like Calgary. Never say never.”

How did you become an EO/Driver?
“I first moved to Alberta from Manitoba in January 2009. The first job I had with the Company was running our wash bay where we flushed tanker trailers that haul bulk chemicals. Two years later, Management offered to put me through a Class 1 driving school. Having my Class 1 license would give me more opportunity and better income, so I did it.”

What do you enjoy about your work? What is your biggest challenge?
“The biggest challenge for me is trying to juggle the long inconsistent hours with having a family with two small children. I enjoy the people I work with and the satisfying feeling of dealing with issues that arise throughout the day and putting in a hard day's work.”

What qualities does it take to be successful at your job?
“I think the biggest thing is to pay attention to the small details and following work procedures. Doing everything properly avoids a lot of headaches later. Doing a proper pre-trip instead of just hopping into the units and taking off. Doing all necessary paperwork and double checking. Taking pride in what I do every day.”

What do you like to do outside of work?
“I have two beautiful and fun little girls (two and four years old). I also have a wife who understands that what I do at work is always to benefit them. Sometimes the long hours and being gone from home a few nights a week is hard on them. My dispatcher and manager do their very best to accommodate us. In my free time I like woodworking and golf. In the winter I play hockey and enjoy downhill skiing.”

How did you get to be a professional driver?
“Obtained my CDL over 20 years ago. Tried many different driver positions until I found my first tanker job. I was hauling cooking oil and tequila for a regional food grade company in the Midwest. When we moved to Oregon in 1998, I landed a job with a small 'mom and pop' environmental business. I started as a driver but moved up through dispatch/office administrator and, eventually, Plant Operations Manager.”

Why did you decide to join Clean Harbors?
“I was out of the environmental business for seven years. My wife and I were looking to make a move and Phoenix was the target. I applied at Clean Harbors (Safety-Kleen) and was offered a job with open arms. My passion for recycling and saving the environment is important to me, my kids and their kids.”

What does a typical day look like for you?
“I'm an early bird (military background) and start my day around 4:45 a.m. First stop is getting the truck unloaded and heading to my first customer by the time they open. I usually have anywhere from 8 to 20 stops per day.”

What qualities does it take to be successful at your job?
“I believe discipline and a strong work ethic helps to be successful.”

“Before coming to Clean Harbors, I was in the military for six years (NAVY). Quick background ... I was in the first Persian Gulf War in Iraq. I was stationed onboard the U.S.S. Midway and cross–decked to the U.S.S. Independence—both aircraft carriers. I was a hydraulics/structural repair troubleshooter/tech on A6-E Intruder aircrafts (VA-115 Eagles), which was a fast–paced job on the flight deck of the carrier. During my last year-and-a-half, I was boots-on-the-ground in Baghdad.”

How did you get to be a professional driver?
“When I came out of the military, I started driving as a means of revenue for me and my family. I have had extensive driver training, from over the road to regional to local. I took to a college course on CDL training as well as equipment operation. I logged over 300,000 miles driving a truck and countless miles since then as every job I have had has required a CDL.”

Why did you decide to join Clean Harbors?
“I decided to join Clean Harbors for the safety aspect. There are numerous other reasons, like the great people. Clean Harbors provides advancement opportunities, which I am very interested in. Clean Harbors also allows me to utilize my skills, whether it be driving, equipment operation, or now in a supervisor role. Overall, I was very impressed with the Company and wanted to put my skills and knowledge of the environmental field to work to help Clean Harbors.”

What does a typical day look like for you?
“There really is no typical day for me, as every job changes as well as the terrain and environment. The one thing that never changes is the focus on my team and myself and safety, we always discuss safety every morning.”

What do you enjoy about working at Clean Harbors?
“I enjoy coming to work! It is a pleasure to be around a good, solid group of individuals. I also like having the trust from my management team to let me work a job/project with minimal interference. I also enjoy that when you work hard in this company, it rewards people for doing so.”

What does it take to be successful at Clean Harbors?
“To be successful at Clean Harbors, you need to be dedicated to safety, professionalism, attention to detail, and be willing to work at any given notice. Having a good background as far as knowledge, good motor skills, education always helps. I believe above all, aside from safety, having the ability to listen and learn.”

Why did you decide to join Clean Harbors and Safety-Kleen?
“I knew the job would provide me growth opportunities with a company that was the leader in our industry. I enjoy working at Safety-Kleen and look forward to continuing to prosper and move up into other positions within the Company.”

What does a typical day look like for you?
“Come into the branch, suit up in my uniform, perform pre-trip on my truck. Then, I review my services for the day and make sure I have everything I need. I head out to perform services for our customers and make sure they are compliant. Return to the branch at the end of the day, post-trip on my truck, and then check out with the Customer Service Manager and prepare for my next day.”

What does it take to be successful as a SSR?
“Being an outgoing and friendly person.”

“Every day is a new challenge. My biggest challenge is to be safe every day.”

“It takes lots of listening, learning, training and following safety procedures.”

What do you like to do outside of work?
“I spend time four-wheeling, camping, being with friends and family, and travelling. In my spare time, I drive a winch truck and I volunteer for animal rescue.”
