Clean Harbors is looking for a Director, Customer Master Data Governance. The Director, Customer Master Data Governance will lead the customer master data governance activities for the Clean Harbors commercial organization. Working closely with Sales Operations and Commercial leadership, the incumbent will define, develop, and oversee the company’s governance of customer master data through processes, systems, and tools. The incumbent will work closely with the Customer Master Data team to ensure rigor and compliance to all processes that uphold customer master data integrity. The role will be based out of Hyderabad, India as a member of the GCC organization within Clean Harbors. As the critical leader of the governance program, the incumbent will identify and map data sources to build and maintain a schema of customer master data flow. The Director will be responsible for implementing good data hygiene practices across the organization to drive consistent and complete customer data; allowing the business to build a reliable shared source of truth within its databases.

This role requires strong, experienced leadership and high, proactive collaboration. The incumbent should have strong business acumen and be well-versed in working with senior leadership in the US. Ability to operate in a nebulous environment while establishing order and prioritizing the needs of the business is a must. The incumbent must be both strategic (establishing direction) and tactical (providing detailed guidance, help troubleshooting, and performing the work) levels.

The incumbent will oversee a team of customer master data analysts, as well as provide day-to-day oversight of several Sales Operations project managers and business analysts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive data governance processes and initiatives through the development of a scalable and strong Customer Master Data Governance Program
  • Develop the enterprise data governance structure; define data governance roles, accountability and ownership, and decision rights, through close partnership with the Sales Operations and Commercial leadership in the US
  • Implement sustainable best practices for management, standardization, and capture of data
  • Partner with Business and IT Stakeholders to develop a Data Governance Roadmap
  • Facilitate bi-directional communication of strategies, priorities, and issues
  • Define and communicate Customer Master Data Governance roles and responsibilities
  • Works with the business units to ensure data ownership and quality
  • Drive organizational behavior change as it relates to the use of data; realizing vision of data managed as one of the highest-value assets of a business
  • Engage with business functions and leadership to identify existing gaps or control weaknesses with master data processes and track issues, while providing subject matter expertise in support of remediation
  • Actively work with business functions to build a plan to correct any gaps discovered with the health of master data
  • Organize and prioritize resources to address gaps discovered
  • Work closely with the Sales Operations Director, SSI to craft a sustainable customer master data strategy to ensure healthy and accurate master data that is consumable by the business and executive leadership
  • Work with other master data functions within the enterprise to share and leverage best-practices and to create alignment on clear ownership of the datasets
  • Document and maintain business processes currently using customer master data; present documentation to senior and executive leadership when requested
  • Audit and validate the quality and procedures associated with current master data
  • Learn and understand end-to-end data flows, including all cross functional connections and inputs with ability to articulate the flow clearly and succinctly to all levels of the organization
  • Perform other duties as assigned




Key Priorities:

  • Data Governance: This role will oversee all data governance SOPs and will be the leader for all customer master data governance activities. The incumbent can interpret and execute the vision for customer master data governance set forth by the Sales Operations Leadership and realize this vision through clear, repeatable, and efficient data governance programs and practices. This role must understand and communicate the critical importance of customer master data to the organization, so that the business understands the need to adhere to the established governance policies. Build a coalition of partners that understand the importance of master data as a critical asset for the company to accelerate knowledge of the enterprise, industry, and markets where we play. 
  • Leadership: In this role, the incumbent will lead a team customer master data analysts. This will be a fast-paced and highly visible line of work, and the customer master data team will require guidance and support as they verify data and enforce data governance practices. You will be responsible for guiding this team as they perform their operational activities, and as they learn how to strategically execute data governance for the betterment of the business.
Communication: This role will be responsible for communicating cross-functionally as you articulate the rationale for the data governance program. Highly proactive, clear, and efficient communication is required for success in this role. Leadership through influence and the ability to build a guiding coalition is critical for success



  • Business-related Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s preferred
  • 10+ years of experience working customer master data governance
  • Experience leading and coaching teams of analysts; developing career paths and opportunities
  • Experience working in data governance or data support role 
  • Experience with data schemas and using ETL pipelines, data conversion components, and API interfaces
  • Experience with manipulating large datasets using SQL, Python, or advanced spreadsheet formulas
  • Technical proficiency in data structuring processes (i.e., ETL) and automation
  • Excellent written and speaking communication skills; highly proactive; previous experience working with US-based leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven track record of ideating and executing on roadmaps
  • Proficiency in metrics-based decision making with an emphasis on reading and interpreting data
  • Knowledge of Master Data Management and Data Governance leading practices and tools
  • Excellent leadership skills and track record delivery through teams and integrating business and technology stakeholders
